As a millennial (Class of 2012), I see the huge difference in senior photography compared to when I was a senior in high school! Social media wasn’t as prevalent as it is now (my freshman year we were still on MySpace and moving to Facebook!) and influencers weren’t a thing. Marketing to Gen Z as a senior photographer requires an understanding of their preferences, behaviors, and communication channels. Here are some strategies to effectively reach and engage Gen Z:
Social Media Presence:
Gen Z is heavily active on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Maintain a strong presence on these platforms by sharing visually appealing content showcasing your senior photography work. Use relevant hashtags and engage with your audience through comments and direct messages.
Authenticity:
Gen Z values authenticity and transparency. Showcasing real seniors you’ve worked with, along with their stories and experiences, can resonate well with this audience. Avoid overly curated or staged content that may come off as inauthentic.
User-Generated Content (UGC):
Encourage seniors you’ve photographed to share their images on social media and tag your business! When a previous senior shares your work, it extends your work among their peers! I add this to the bottom of my email when I send out their final gallery.
“I am SO excited for you to see your photos and I hope you absolutely LOVE them. I had so much fun shooting these for you! If you share the photos on social media, please tag me (@kiralordphotography) so I can see!”
Interactive Content:
This is what I struggle most with but have vowed 2024 to be the year of interactive content for KLP. Gen Z appreciates interactive and immersive experiences. Consider hosting Instagram Live sessions where you showcase behind-the-scenes of your photoshoots, Q&A sessions, or even live editing tutorials.
Inclusive Marketing:
Ensure your marketing efforts reflect diversity and inclusivity. Gen Z values representation and is more likely to resonate with brands that showcase a diverse range of seniors in their marketing materials.
Mobile Optimization:
Optimize your website and any marketing materials for mobile devices. Gen Z primarily accesses content through their smartphones, so it’s crucial that your website is mobile-friendly and loads quickly. There are websites that provide a free resource of plugging in your website so it gets analyzed on how fast it loads. Pindgom.com will give you a numerical grade + tell you how quickly your website loads!
Interactive Storytelling:
Use storytelling to connect with Gen Z on a deeper level. Share stories about your journey as a photographer, memorable experiences with seniors, or the creative process behind your photoshoots.
Feedback and Engagement:
Actively seek feedback from Gen Z clients and engage with them on social media. Respond to comments, messages, and reviews promptly, showing that you value their opinions and experiences.
By implementing these strategies, you can effectively market your senior photography services to Gen Z and establish a strong connection with this audience segment!
